Artist’s Statement
Creating art is as much a physical process as it is mental; most of the creation is done when I am not making art. The subject matter I employ is a combination of the natural world as well as the subconscious conjuring of dreams. When creating oil-based paintings, I draw an image on the canvas, then wash the canvas with turpentine and oil paint, and then apply a glaze of oil paints combined with clear oils. My wood carvings begin when I select the wood, then I wipe of linseed or jojoba oil or a mix of oil paint with mineral spirits. I also use watercolors and colored pencils and markers to create mixed-media illustrations. In college, I studied intaglio etching and copperplate engraving which is a medium that lends itself well to my improvisational surrealistic line drawings.
