SVAN proudly sponsored Carl Heilman and his multi media presentation “I Am the Adirondacks” to a sold out and standing room only crowd at the 200 seat Fulton Montgomery Community College theater Friday evening, November 5.  Surprise guest, beloved Adirondack musician Dan Berggren, one of the collaborators on the project and Carl met and conversed with the crowd that gathered for the reception preceding the presentation.  Several of Mr. Heilman's prints were on display in the theater lobby. For 35 years both Carl Heilman and Dan Berggren have been channeling their love and passion for the Adirondacks in their different art forms. Carl, relaxed and very engaging, addressed the audience briefly with information about the presentation then introduced Mr Berggren. The lights dimmed and Dan Berggren, a simple figure with his guitar under a single spotlight, sang three songs expressing aspects of Adirondack life. The mood was perfectly set for the presentation.

“ I Am the Adirondacks” is based on a poem written by Adirondack resident Miriam Kashiwa.  The Spirit of the Adirondacks, their splendor, their beauty and the life they offer is captured in a powerful narrative, Heilman’s stunning evocative images and the beautiful music written by Berggren, Dan Duggan and Peggy Lynn,  and composer / musician Casey Filiaci, who also orchestrated the final score.  The audience was obviously moved - audible reactions to many of the exhilarating and sometimes haunting images filled the theater.

Heilman and Berggren were both busy after wards signing CD’s, books, posters and other materials. Attendees were smiling and looked full of a renewed appreciation for out beautiful region. Like the presentation, the event was a wonderful collaborative effort. St. Mary’s Hospital at Amsterdam generously underwrote the event and the Art Guild of FMCC provided additional support.  SVAN is grateful for the community and member support for this event and was pleased to be able to offer an event of this caliber to our communities.
